The War Within

Step 1 · ~25 min

Powerlessness

Honesty · Surrender & Foundation

Overview

Warpath Step 1. We admitted we were powerless over life on our own, and that our attempts to control people, outcomes, and pain had left our lives unmanageable.

Theme: Honesty.

Key Scripture. "For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out." - Romans 7:18

What this step is about. Step 1 is the end of the performance. It is the moment you stop editing the story and tell the truth about where self-effort has taken you. Not a lecture on total depravity. A simple admission: on your own, you cannot fix this.

Why it matters. Every man who ever got free started here. Pride keeps you managing. Honesty ends the war. Until you name the powerlessness, you will keep trying harder at the very thing that put you on the ground. God does not resist you for being broken. He resists you for pretending you are not (James 4:6).

What Scripture says. Paul, the most disciplined religious man alive, wrote Romans 7 in surrender: "Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?" That is not weakness. That is the doorway. The very next line points to Jesus. You cannot be delivered from a war you refuse to admit you are losing.

Warpath truth. You're not powerless because you are weak. You're powerless because you were never designed to carry it alone. Admitting that is not defeat. It is the first honest thing you have said in a long time.

Pray

Father, I stop pretending I am fine. I have run this on my own strength and I am tired. I cannot fix me. I need You. Not tomorrow. Now. Have mercy on me. Amen.

Sit with this

No wrong answers. Take your time. Answer honestly, out loud if you can.

  1. 01

Where in your life are you still trying to manage what only God can carry?

  2. 02

What has your self-management actually cost you - in your marriage, your body, your mind, your walk?

  3. 03

If you told the whole truth today, what would you have to stop pretending?

Before you walk on

Today: say it out loud to God, and to one safe person - 'I cannot do this on my own.' Then write down one area where you have been playing god of your own life.
