Lesson 6 · 10 min
Forgiveness
Closing the door the enemy uses most.
Overview
Theme: Freedom.
Key Scripture. "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you." - Ephesians 4:32
What this step is about. Unforgiveness is the door the enemy uses most. It looks like justice and feels like control. It is actually a chain around your own neck. Forgiveness does not excuse what happened. It releases you from carrying it.
Why it matters. Every person carrying an old offense is fighting the last war while the new one is at the door. Bitterness poisons prayer, marriage, sleep, and joy. Jesus put forgiveness at the center of His prayer for a reason. Refuse it, and everything else clogs.
What Scripture says. Matthew 6:14-15 - if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Colossians 3:13 - forgive as the Lord has forgiven you. Hebrews 12:15 - see to it that no root of bitterness springs up and defiles many.
Warpath truth. Forgiveness is a decision before it is a feeling. You may have to make it more than once. That is fine. Every time the memory rises, hand it to Jesus again. Boundaries are wise. Bitterness is not. You can forgive from a distance. You cannot walk in freedom while you refuse.
Pray
Father, I release them to You. I do not excuse what was done. I refuse to carry it any longer. Take it. Heal me where it landed. Free me to love as You have loved me. Amen.
Sit with this
No wrong answers. Take your time. Answer honestly, out loud if you can.
01
Who are you still holding an account against?
02
What has that account cost you so far?
03
What would it look like to hand it to Jesus today?
Before you walk on
Today: write down one name you have been holding. Speak the release out loud to God. Tear the paper up when you are done.
