Lesson 3 · 10 min

Temptation

Seeing the setup before the strike.

Overview

Theme: Escape.

Key Scripture. "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." - 1 Corinthians 10:13

What this step is about. Temptation is not sin. It is the setup for sin. The enemy is not creative - he uses the same handful of hooks. If you can see the setup, you can take the escape God always provides.

Why it matters. People do not usually fall in the moment. They fall in the setup - the phone in bed, the drink on an empty stomach, the private tab, the second look, the unspoken bitterness. When you learn the setup, you kill the sin long before the crash.

What Scripture says. James 1:14-15 says each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Jesus, in Matthew 4, met every temptation with Scripture. He did not debate the devil. He answered him with "It is written."

Warpath truth. You're not stronger than the setup. You do not have to be. God has already provided the exit. Take it early. Walk away. Call a brother or sister. Turn the phone in. Kill the pattern where it starts. Waiting until the moment is losing on purpose.

Pray

Father, open my eyes to the setup. Give me the courage to take the escape before the moment traps me. I want to be free more than I want to be comfortable. Amen.
